This is the new website for Naval Encyclopedia. The website is just out of in drydock after her overhaul. She is running post-refit sea trials. Expect new daily articles. The brave old ship provides since 1997 a one-stop place for everything related to naval warfare through ships classes, going back to antiquity to the present day, with particular focus on WW1, WW2 and the cold war, albeit extending to the present day and all the world's navies, as well as to the Nineteenth Century. This long endeavour is planned to last until "completion" in 2027, with future entries in opacity both in the top and side menus. Naval encyclopedia also goes through some civilian aspects (clippers, liners, oil platforms, naval tech in general) and battles/tactics as well.

HMS Repulse (1868)

Written by navalencyc no comments
HMS Repulse was a wooden-hulled, central-battery ironclad laid down as a 91-gun, second-rate Bulwark-class ship of the line. Work was suspended for conversion into an Ironclad, but suspended again until the performance of earlier conversions from wooden ships of the line could be assessed. It only resumed in 1866, completed in 1870, the last British wooden-hulled ironclad completed. She was assigned as guard ship in Scotland , then flagship of the Pacific Station in 1872, until back home in 1877 while rounding the Horn under sail. She was placed in reserve while back home, until re-commissioned in 1881 as guard ship and back to reserve in 1885, sold for scrap in 1889.

About Naval Encyclopedia

Naval Encyclopedia is the first online warship museum. She was laid down in St Nazaire Yard back in September 1995, launched in December 1996 and completed in March 1997, with 1000+ crew for now, and counting. Dedicated to the history of all ships of the industrial era and 20th century, so 1820 to 1990, but also earlier times. The main difference for this early period is to study ships types through some famous examples. IS ("internet ship") Naval Encyclopedia is constantly modified and upgraded since years. This current version is #7. After her last refit in 2023, the present ship is currenly in her 2025-26 overhaul for the next five years of service. The crusty hull also needed serious scrapping to regain full speed. Numerous additions over the years also leads to a complete machinery overhaul.
